Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (Marathi: विष्णू नारायण भातखंडे)(August 10, – September 19, ) was an Indian musicologist who wrote the first modern treatise on Hindustani classical music (The north Indian variety of Indian classical music), an art which had been propagated earlier for a few.

Born of a noble Brahmin family, Bhatkhande was a man of modern outlook. Talented and educated, he started life as a lawyer. The degenerate condition of the art of arts, however, turned this seemingly prosaic lawyer into a musician, who was destined to be one of the greatest authorities in the field.
